Three Mistakes People Make Cleaning Wood Blinds

October 10, 2026

First mistake: using a wet cloth. Even a lightly damp cloth on wood blinds will dull the surface finish over time, and on some models it can cause slight warping. The right way is to wipe with a dry or very lightly dampened microfiber cloth.

Second mistake: wiping the slats in random directions. Each slat sits at its own angle, and pressing hard against that angle can loosen the hinge points over time. The right way is to wipe each slat along its own tilt, with light pressure.

Third mistake: using general-purpose cleaning sprays. Most of these are made for glass or plastic, not wood, and the alcohol in them fades the wood's natural surface layer over time. The right way is a dry cloth for dust, and a wood-specific care product only for actual marks.

The short version: wood blinds aren't afraid of water so much as they're afraid of water used carelessly. Weekly dry wiping, with a light care oil once or twice a year, is usually enough.
