What Curtain Actually Works in a South-Facing Living Room

September 1, 2026

An architect asked us last year: should the same sheer go on both sides of a living room, or different ones for each facade? The answer was no, right away. A south-facing window gets direct sun for most of the day, and the light is far harsher and more variable than on the north side. Sheer on its own usually isn't enough here — the room runs too bright in the afternoon, then falls into sharp shadow by early evening.

On the north side, it's the opposite. The light stays more constant and softer. Sheer on its own is often enough there, and sometimes no curtain is needed at all beyond a thin layer for privacy.

We've made facade orientation one of the first questions we ask on a project now. For south and west-facing rooms, if the light needs to be blocked completely, we recommend a blind or zebra curtain instead of sheer, not alongside it — sheer softens light, it doesn't block it, and the two aren't used together. North and east-facing rooms are usually fine with sheer alone.

In the end, choosing a curtain starts before fabric preference — it starts with understanding how a window actually relates to the sun.
